DIY Beard Oil with Essential Oils

Okay, I figured it’s time to put my first post out there with a recipe I’ve tried recently. This was nowhere near the first thing I tried when I got my Starter Kit, but it’s an easy recipe to get started with and guaranteed to get the man in your life on board with an oily lifestyle 🙂 My husband actually came to me asking for something like this after he read a few things online. He likes (read: is obsessed with) growing a beard and basically just hates shaving so he will let it grow for weeks until it starts to look to “scraggly” and then start fresh. I’ve suggested beard oil a few times to make his beard softer and more tamable, but sometimes it takes him awhile to hear me 😉

Oily Livin DIY Beard Oil With Essential Oils

So my husband asked for a beard oil to make his growing beard softer, less itchy, and moisturized. This recipe did the trick, not to mention it smells amazing! I ended up basing my recipe off of this one we found online with some good information about carrier oils and choosing an essential oil. My hubs requested jojoba oil as a carrier based on what he read. Other carrier oils that would be great are grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, or fractionated coconut oil. For essential oils, Hubs chose Cedarwood and Peppermint because he liked their smell. I suggested Tea Tree for acne or Lavender for skincare, but his choices are good too 🙂 Other oils I think would smell great are Idaho Balsam Fir, Orange, Rosemary, or Bergamot. So here’s the run down of the recipe:

DIY Beard Oil Ingredients:

  • 1oz dropper bottle*
  • 1oz carrier oil (jojoba oil)
  • 10-20 drops of essential oil

*Be sure to use a glass bottle if using any citrus oils!

Directions For Making Your Own Beard Oil:

Like I said, this recipe is super simple! Just add desired amount of carrier oil to your dropper bottle (mine holds about 1 ounce), then add essential oils. I wouldn’t add more than 20 drops of essential oil for 1oz of carrier oil. I used 10 drops of Cedarwood and 3 drops of Peppermint to create a manly-woodsy scent. I didn’t need more than a few drops of peppermint because it is a very strong scent and didn’t want it to be overwhelming to him! Then shake and apply a few drops to beard 1-2 times a day.

My hubs gives the oil an “A+” and says it’s like conditioner for his beard. It makes it less “crazy” and “smells like candy canes” 🙂 I can’t wait to experiment with different smells and carrier oils for this. Feel free to leave me comments if you try this recipe and share what you think works for you!
